The Athirapally waterfall, situated at the entrance to the Sholayar ranges of the Western Ghats mountains is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in India. Athirapally has a charm and appeal, unique to itself, with dense greenery all around and forested hills in the backdrop, to which the tropical monsoon of Kerala lends its misty magic. The monsoon rains turn the gorgeous fall into a sight to behold with rushing water falling into an 80ft gorge with thunderous roar.

Athirappilly-Vazhachal area is the only location where all four South Indian species of hornbills — the great hornbill (the state bird of Kerala), Malabar pied hornbill, Malabar grey hornbill, and the Indian grey hornbill are found living together.
