Ahilya Fort  - Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh
A two hour drive from Indore, the Ahilya fort hotel , located on the banks of the sacred  Narmada river in Maheshwar atop the massive sandstone walls of Maheshwar Fort, was the personal residence of the queen Ahilyabai Holkar who ruled from 1765 – 1796.
In the year 2000, Richard Holkar, her descendant and son of the last Maharaja of Indore, converted  the 250 year old royal residences within the fort into one of the most eclectic heritage hotels in Indi.
The hotel has a very distinctive character of its own steeped in fascinating regional history and the  is delightful and the view of the ghats and the river below below is truly spectacular.
